Don’t Make These Mistakes at Your Summer Wedding

If you’re lucky enough to schedule a summer wedding, you’re probably feeling on top of the world and thinking nothing can go wrong. But sometimes overconfidence can lead to unnecessary mistakes. There are five common errors that engaged couples make when planning a summer wedding and we’re here to share them with you. This way, you can be sure your big day will be exactly as imagined.

Not Paying Attention to the Venue

It’s always a good idea to have a sheltered space for your event because not everyone can tolerate the heat, the sun, or the mosquitoes! (But avoid clear-roofed tents, as they can act like little greenhouses and make the whole event a heated affair.)

In addition, if you’re having an outdoor celebration, check the weather closer to the date to see if you need to plan for rain or a cold spell. There’s no point in pre-ordering umbrellas or blankets if you won’t use them, especially if your budget is tight, but a week in advance should give you some time to do a quick last-minute shopping trip.

And should you hold a ceremony or photoshoot during the daytime, keep in mind how the sun’s position might affect it. You don’t want to be squinting when you exchange vows and you don’t want your guests to be blinded while you do so, either. With photoshoots, try to avoid them during the peak sunny period as your photos may not turn out as well as you’d hoped. If you can, take your photos closer to sunset or sunrise.

Poor Menu Planning

Summer generally calls for lighter fare, which isn’t a bad thing. However, if you choose that route, always have some heavier and filling items available as well. You don’t want your guests to go hungry and you definitely don’t want the lack of sustenance to contribute to alcohol-related mishaps.

On the other hand, you also don’t want the food to be too heavy. Large or hard-to-digest meals combined with hot temperatures are a sure way to lull your guests to sleep.

Forgetting to Stay Hydrated

Summer cocktails and champagne usually go down easily. Hence, it’s really easy for anyone to overdo it. Therefore, it’s advised to keep all cocktails low in alcohol and have plenty of alcohol-free options as well. In addition, make sure your guests always have access to water.

Choosing the Wrong Cake

A professional wedding baker will normally ask right away when you’re planning to have the wedding and what type of venue you’ll be booking. There’s a good reason for that; depending on the cake you choose, it might not hold up too well in the heat. Buttercream frosting, for example, is best avoided on a hot summer day.

If you’re set on a cake that can easily go wrong, consider having it delivered at the last minute. Or, if you’re determined to display it throughout the event, ask if your cake designer can create a Styrofoam clone of your actual design. Then, have one of your helpers swap it out when no one’s looking.

Thinking Everyone Will Look Perfect

Heat and humidity can turn anyone’s hot look into a hot mess. Therefore, it’s a great idea to have an aesthetic refreshment bar available in all bathrooms for both you and your guests to use. Think blotting papers, hairspray, spray deodorant, etc. This really should be a must at any wedding, but especially during the summer. Your guests will thank you!
